HOT SHOP DESCRIPTION
We operate a Mobile Glassblowing Studios Phoenix furnace. This is a combination furnace/glory hole with a side mounted burner, a 40 lb invested crucible and a side mounted pipe warmer. The working (open door) dimensions are 12″ high by 14″ wide by 19″ deep. The furnace is set up outdoors and fed from a 100 gallon propane tank. Our workspace is covered, but the furnace is exposed, so consider the weather before you book. We are not a continuous-fire glass studio. We generally light our furnace 4 to 5 hours before our intended work time and charge with a modest amount of glass, usually less than 20 lbs of cullet, but typically 10-15 lbs. We are currently using Bomma glass cullet.
Dedicated Rental Day:
Our dedicated studio rental time secures our furnace solely for your use for one day. We will charge cullet to the amount that you specify, light the furnace, and you will have 4-5 hours of working time after a 4-5 hour melt. The price includes 15 lbs. of cullet. You may purchase additional cullet at $3.50 per pound. You will be charged per pound into the furnace, not by finished product weight. We recommend beginning your session later in the day to insure the most seedless glass, although we have found that 4 hours of melt time with a minimum 1/2 hour squeeze to be sufficient for our purposes (with an initial charge of 15 lbs cullet). We can work with you to determine the best start times and charge quantities, but note that 20 to 25 lbs is about the max initial charge of raw cullet (that about fills the crucible). Melt times will increase beyond that amount, as we must add the additional glass in stages. We usually light around 5 am. You may start working any time between 10 am and noon, but all work must be completed and in the annealer by 3 pm unless other arrangements have been made.
Hourly Rates:
We will allow shorter rental times if we have openings on our scheduled production/teaching days. The hourly rate will be the same as our “Blow and Go” class rate and you will actually be booking one or more of those class spots to reserve your working session. We recommend booking later times if seeds are an issue with you.
Along with the session fee, currently $53 per hour, there will be an additional charge of $3 per pound of finished glass (weighed after annealing). This fee will be charged when you pick up your work and it will apply to everything that comes out of the annealer, even if it comes out in more pieces than went in.

The Annealer is kept in our working trailer with access very close to the furnace (a step up into the trailer is required)
